| Luang Prabang in the north is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and certainly the best place to get in touch with Laotian history and culture. For more than eight centuries Luang Prabang was the royal residence and the political and cultural center of Laos. The Pak Ou Caves with thousands of Buddha images are only a 1.5 hour boat trip up the Mekong River from Luang Prabang. Phonsavanh is home to one of the last mysteries of Asia, the "Plain of Jars." Despite many existing theories and speculations, archaeologist still haven’t found the real meaning and function of these countless, up to 87 feet high, earthenware jars lying scattered over the plateau. |
