Laos is a small, sleepy little landlocked country that looks like it missed most of the 20th century. Vientiane, the capital city sits in a bend of the Mekong River amidst fertile alluvial plains. Vientiane (pronounced 'Vieng Chan' by the locals) is a laid-back city with interesting wats (temples) and lively markets. Visit the mysterious "Plain of Jars" the name given to a large area extending around Phonsavanh where huge jars (up to 1 ton each) of unknown origin are scattered about in at least a dozen groupings. It is one of the most intriguing sights in Laos. Then visit the ancient capital city of Luang Prabang. Famous for its historic temples and beautiful setting surrounded by mountains, Luang Prabang was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Enjoy a boat trip on the Mekong River to Pak Ou Caves with thousands of Buddha images.
