Day 2: Full Day Temple Sightseeing (B)
Breakfast at hotel. Enjoy a full day of private sightseeing with your personal guide. The highlight today will be a visit to Angkor Wat, the most venerated, largest and best preserved temple in the area. It has become the symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag. This temple was built in the early 12th century and is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu.
You will also visit Angkor Thom, enter by the monumental South Gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods. You will also explore some of the terraces and ruins within this temple complex before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple. This temple is one of the most popular at Angkor, where you will find giant stone faces smiling enigmatically down at you from every angle.
Also visit Ta Prohm, one of the most popular attractions of Angkor, as much of the jungle has not been cleared and it looks very much as most of the Angkor monuments would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled across them.
Lunch Break: A lunch break will be taken during full day sightseeing tours. Please note that the cost of lunch is not included. Your guide will give you the option of returning to your hotel or stopping at a local restaurant. You may also ask the guide to pick a restaurant near one of the local markets should you wish to explore on your own. |

Breakfast at hotel. Another full day of private sightseeing with your personal guide. Get an early start today, travel overland to Phnom Kulen, revered by all Cambodians as a sacred place of pilgrimage. It was the site, then known as Mount Mahendraparvata, that Jayavarman II chose in the year 802 to proclaim himself a divine universal ruler and marked the beginning of the Angkor period of Khmer history.
This is also near the headwaters of the Siem Reap River, in the river bed are carved hundreds of linga images. The lingas are symbol of God Shiva's essence and were made to purify the water of the river and make it fertile to then irrigate the rice fields.
Afterwards, stop at Banteay Srei, built in the late 10th century, it is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple has three central towers which are decorated with male and female divinities and beautiful filigree relief work.
